March 5th Update

As we prepare ourselves for our final week of school before the two week Spring Break I am sorry to say that our terrific Principal Mr Peter Evans has not sufficiently recovered and will remain on health leave.  We are fortunate to have retired Principal Madame Natalie Morissette covering for VP Lia Cuccurrullo until next Friday, then we will welcome Madame Valerie Carriere as our new Vice Principal on March 29.  I will remain as Principal until Mr Evans returns.

Morning basketball skills and drills continue next week for all grade 4 – 7 students who have returned a signed consent form to Mr Land. Tuesday March 9 at recess and Thursday March 11 at 8:15 are for grade 4s and 5s.  Monday March 8 morning and Wednesday recess are for grade 6s and 7s.  We will resume again after spring break, and then likely start badminton skills.

On March 9 at 7pm there is a parent presentation titled TECH, COVID and KIDS, by Dr. Shimi Kang.   More information has been sent today.  This is a shared initiative with 8 VSB elementary PACs.

On March 10 the 3 schools on site, Maple Grove, Cavell, and Magee will be combining for a joint LOCKDOWN Drill.  However, as of now, the Vancouver Police Department WILL NOT be participating with us in this drill.  This type of Lockdown Drill has been done in the past with Maple Grove and Magee, but of course this year we are in a new building and will be adding Cavell.  Vice Principal Morissette and myself will tour the school during the drill ensuring that classrooms/teaching areas are safe and secure.  There will be a staff debrief following the drill.

Maple Grove welcomed back many Option 4 students to school Monday March 1.   Administration met briefly with the parents and students outside, undercover at the North entrance on 45th avenue.  Administration then took the students inside for further COVID protocols, gave a short tour, and delivered the students to their new classroom.  ANY Option 4 student who has not yet decided to return to in-school instruction, now has the opportunity to return on any Monday, provided the family informs our school office staff by the previous Thursday.

Warm regards,

Kevin Land
