PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
We have added new support staff to the school. Please welcome Miss Iris and Miss Akeala as two of our newest SSA’s. Both are experienced SSA’s who come to MG with a vision and enthusiasm that’s infectious and energizing.
If you haven’t seen our latest messaging to students, check out the bulletin board across from the office.
We are all about creating teaching and learning opportunities for students to learn about being responsible for their grades, success, actions, words and choices.
We’re very excited by the work of Mr. Greg Quan. Mr. Quan is the music department head at Magee and teaches a Tuesday afternoon string class after school . We’re super excited by this program and can’t wait to see the group’s first performance.
Huge Thanks to our awesome PAC. The latest intramural noon hour activities have started. DancePlay has been a big hit and the kids love it. This program started in Mid-October and will run into the new year.
Traffic and Parking
I want to encourage all parents to consider parking a block away from the school and walking the remaining distance. This cuts down on traffic around the school AND provides nice bonding time with your child as you walk to school together. There will be a lot of construction on the street front over the coming weeks and we want parents to be aware that foot traffic is better than car traffic. Please be reminded that we have volunteer parents and students who supervise and participate in our school Safety Patrol. We ask that all parents adhere to their commands at the crosswalk and 47th Ave.
Also, please do not use the staff parking lot as a drop-off area. Staff do their best to get to work on time and blocking them from parking in a timely manner is inconsiderate. The CoV has installed new 3 minute parking signs all around Maple Grove. We encourage you to consider parking around the perimeter of the building if you’re running short on time in the morning and not able to walk the block or two to reduce traffic.
Parent Parking Patrol- Expression of interest.
Dear Parents… the school continues to have concerns over the fascinating and often dangerous driving habits we witness on a daily basis in front of the school. It’s clear that we need adults out there on a daily basis to remind drivers of safe driving habits and to ensure the safety and security of our children as they come and go in the morning and after school.
If you are interested in being a member of the school parent parking patrol, please send an email to Principal Evans pevans@vsb.bc.ca and he will add your name to a list of parents who are interested in having a meeting to devise a schedule so that parents can assist in observing the safety and security of children at the beginning and end of the day.
Kindergarten Registration for 2020 2021!
Do you have a child born in 2015? Registration for Kindergarten for 2020 2021 starts on November 1!
Registration Process
With the opening of school registration for the 2020-21 school year on November 1st, the VSB has implemented online registration service for parents. The registration process has two steps:
Step 1: Complete the online registration process at vsbapplynow.vsb.bc.ca Print out the completed registration form. (Note, this link won’t be active until November 1)
Step 2: Bring the completed registration form along with the required documents to your catchment school.
Notes:
The registration process is not complete until you have competed both steps in the process.
This is not a “first come, first served” registration process. However, you should have your child’s registration completed by January 31, 2020.
Visit the Student Registration Page on the Vancouver School Board website for more information.
In order to secure a spot in Maple Grove for 2020 2021 you should register before January 31, 2020. And if you are interested in a Choice Program, you registration must be completed by January 31, 2020 so that you can participate in the lottery.
All the info is on the VSB website – or click on the Registration/Admissions tab on this website.
We are wondering about Montessori numbers – do you have a child born in 2015 who has a sibling in Grades K to 6 Montessori at Maple Grove? Please call the school at 604 713 5356 to let Mrs. Peters, or Mrs Thow know. Remember you have to register at your child’s catchment school even if there is a sibling at Maple Grove.
It is December!
Thank you to all the families that have sent in donations and contributed money to our Holiday Hampers for families at our sister school, Nightingale Elementary.
The collection period is December 2 to 11 and your child should have brought home a suggestion for their contribution. (Please make sure to check the expiry dates and please do not send bulk items.) With our CashonLine system, parents are able to make a monetary donation on line: vsb.schoolcashonline.com
We are hoping to receive $4.00 from each student to meet our goal for purchasing gift cards from grocery stores in the neighbourhood.
If you have extra wrapping paper at home that you could donate, we would love it to wrap up our hamper boxes in festive paper. Please bring it to the office before next Wednesday. Thank you!
We had a very successful bake sale on December 4th. Thank you to our very generous parent, Jackson Lee, who runs Cobbs Bread Bakery in Tsawwassen Commons, and those parents who contributed baked goods. We raised over $750.00!
Orders for tickets for the Holiday Concert (matinee and evening performance on December 19) are due to classroom teachers by tomorrow, December 6th.
