PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

 Dear Maple Grove Families,

I’ve deferred my usual Principal’s message/ reminders to next weeks blog.  Today I will be writing about an incident that took place in our surrounding school community.

Update: Hold & Secure at Magee and Maple Grove schools – Thursday, April 26, 2018

You may be aware that this morning, Magee Secondary and Maple Grove Elementary temporarily went into hold and secure status after the Vancouver Police Department advised of a police incident.  Student and staff safety is our top priority.  The exterior school doors were locked to prevent anyone entering the building in accordance with established Vancouver School Board emergency procedures.  Regular school activities continued within the school without interruption.  The hold and secure status was lifted at approximately 10:00 a.m.

Students and staff reacted calmly and continued with their school activities.  However, we understand such incidents may cause concern.  If you have any questions about the school response to this incident, please feel free to contact me.

Extended Stay Release Drill.

Last year Maple Grove tried their first ever extended stay release.  I was away from school on leave and Ms. Thompson ran the event.  Essentially, it’s an opportunity to drill our student release system in the event of an emergency where students could potentially be on the grounds for extended periods of time- such as after a major earthquake.

On Thursday, May 3rd at 2:00 pm, all schools in Vancouver will be practicing their earthquake drills.  Schools have been encouraged to implement their extended stay release system so that students, staff and parents gain some familiarity with the process.  To that effect, we will practice our extended student release on May 3rd at 2:00 pm, and we will early release students to parents, or identified emergency contacts, so that students may leave school early that day.  If parents are not able to participate, we completely understand.   Students will be supervised as normal until 3:00 pm.  Thursday is a regular day, we are just giving parents a chance to experience our extended release system and a chance for students and staff to walk through the drill.  There is no obligation to pick your child up early if its inconvenient for you.

Please refer to the attached site map and know that entrance to the Greeter and Gate 1 will be off of Cypress St.  We will be keeping the south area (47th Ave) of the school free for emergency vehicles.

Parents are requested to arrive at 2:00 pm off Cypress St – at the south end of the school.  Receive instructions from the greeter and proceed to 1 Check-in Gate and then 2 Release Gate.  (For those of you who remember the drill from last year, we are actually going in the opposite direction this year as it makes more sense for traffic flow and parent/student containment.

Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 6 Students,

We would like to invite you to an information session regarding Grade 6 Camp. The meeting will be held on Wednesday May 2nd at 3:15 in the Library and should last no longer than 45 minutes. It will be an opportunity to learn more about the educational program, the camp site, schedule of the three days, behavioural expectations of the students and responsibilities of chaperones. It will also be a chance to address any questions or concerns you might have.

Here is a few items of note:

  • Camp will be held from June 6 – 8
  • Next week your child will receive a package of forms that need to be filled out for both Maple Grove and the camp, Sea-to-Sky. Please return these by Friday May 4th.
  • The cost of camp is yet to be determined, as fund raising is still happening. In the past it has been approximately $350 – 375. Please provide a deposit of $200.00 by Friday May 4th. Cheques should be made out to Maple Grove Elementary. The balance, once determined, will be due on Friday June 1st.
  • We do require parent volunteers to accompany us to camp. If you are interested, please forward your contact information to your child’s teacher. All costs for volunteers are covered.
