September 29 Update

principals-messagePRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Greetings everyone!  As we wrap up this first month of September, I want to acknowledge all of the overtime that the staff have put in to ensure that students settle quickly into classes and class routines.  I want to recognize all of the staff who helped cover classes where there was no assigned teacher.  We have completed our hiring, and we are now actively looking to secure teachers on call (TOC’s) who would like to sub regularly at Maple Grove.  I would like to take a moment to welcome our most recent staff additions: Ms. Janet Batsoulas (replacing Ms. Lam until her return at the end of March), Ms. Mary Ahn (has joined our resource team full-time ) and Miss Isabelle Tang (has joined our resource team on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and continues to be Ms. Seebaran’s job share partner on Thursdays and Fridays).

I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge the VSB grounds department who worked tirelessly with the CoV to ensure that the Gateway at 45th was opened up and completed in a timely manner.  And while we will have to wait for the grass seed to take root in the area between the Magee Field and Maple Grove, it will be a, “wait worthwhile” as we will have a new green way for the spring.

traffic issues

REGARDING TRAFFIC– I can’t tell you how concerned we are with the unorthodox and often unique driving scenarios that play out at the front of the school each morning (near Cypress Street and 47th).  I would like to forewarn parents that we are contacting the Vancouver Police and we will be asking for officers from their traffic division to come to the school and ticket unsafe driving.  I also want to alert parents that we will be contacting CoV by law enforcement officers to enforce city bylaws regarding cars and parking on the street.  Our number one priority is the safety and security of your children as they make their way to school.  On that note, I, again, want to caution parents not to use the school parking lot or the driveway out front as drop offs or walkways with their children. Commercial vehicles and staff use both those areas to park – and they are simply not expecting to see children walking in those areas in the early morning hours.

We encourage all parents to park your cars away from the school and walk the one or two blocks with your child – enjoy the time in the morning for good conversation and shaping the rest of the day with your child.

Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend our first PAC meeting.  It was wonderful to see so many new, and returning faces.  It was great to see so many parents at the ELL Thursday morning class and at the Friday morning coffee social.  Also thank you to all the parents who have been supporting the school with their time, money and volunteerism.  We appreciate working with such great advocates of public education.  Thank you everyone!

Terry Fox Run

The Terry Fox run scheduled for Friday was postponed. Some classes chose to run anyway.  The whole school will participate in a run next week.

Pro D

Professional Day on Friday, September 22: Art with Ms. Smith: Our new Vice Principal, Mariette Smith offered us several art lessons to share with our class. In addition to presenting art concepts, they made connections to our school goal of social emotional learning (SEL). With years of experience teaching art at the elementary and secondary levels, Smith is a tremendous resource and inspiration.

 safety patrol

Safety Patrol: Thanks to Mr. Naipaul and a team of service-oriented students, Safety Patrol is at work every morning making the trip to school safer.
