Dear Parents,
It’s been another fascinating week at Maple Grove.  Lots going on in the district and at school.  Last night we had a wonderful presentation on Social Emotional Learning and how students a Maple Grove are learning to develop a more profound awareness of their feelings and emotions (see below).

Undoubtedly Vancouver School Board issues will continue to appear in the media.  I can assure you that it’s business as usual at the school level as there’s lots of work to be done by December.

Students are very excited as Halloween is quickly approaching.  We are looking forward to our PAC sponsored Halloween Dance this evening (See below for details).

Please feel free to join us Monday morning as all kinds of spooky creatures wander the hallways of Maple Grove.  Student and staff dress up for Halloween at this school.

The staff continually practice and reflect on how to create opportunities for students to experience intellectual risk-taking, collaboration, problem-solving, and application of classroom learning to real life situations.  We discuss and debate which strategies might work best to promote ownership of learning for students and to design instruction, and supports, to integrate a variety of innovative technological tools and resources to enhance student teaching and learning.  Our commitment at Maple Grove is to provide a safe and intellectually challenging environment that will empower students to become innovative thinkers, creative problem solvers and inspired learners who are engaged with their learning as they prepare to be 21st Century leaders.  We encourage all students to embrace their educational experience and continue to strive for their personal best.

Please have a safe and enjoyable weekend.
Mr. Evans

PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT

It was nice to see so many parents out to the Parent Information Session with Todd Schleyer.  Todd Schleyer gave an informative and entertaining talk about Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and how it’s being used at Maple Grove to help students develop a sense of self-awareness regarding their feelings.  He also did a Q + A with parents regarding implementing strategies and making connections from what’s happening at school to how to use SEL at home.  The focus of his work as a STIBS (Student Teacher Intensive Behavioural Support) worker has been the education and delivery of Social Emotional learning curriculum in the classroom and school wide.   Offering Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to this generation of learners will help to provide a greater understanding of the changing world around them and to assist students in being aware of their emotions and how to manage them.

Todd has been working with the Maple Grove staff since last year- during the course of our 6 Pro D days and this year- for the past month.  He has introduced staff and students to brain-based learning, Zones of Regulation and StrongKids social emotional learning programs.

Thank you Todd for a wonderfully engaging and informative presentation.
