Good Afternoon Maple Grove Parents!  Spring has sprung and so too have all the flowers.  We’re in for a warm weekend- and with 8 weeks left in the school year- the end is in sight.  It’s time to start thinking about summer holidays and plans for the family.  School life is busy and frenetic at this point.  Budget meetings, staff, planning, numbers, enrolment, accounting, student learning, projects and year-end are all daily topics at school these days.  I wanted to acknowledge the two Susan’s for helping our Grads get organized for their yearbook photos today.  Hearding cats comes to mind… but really, Susan was so organized that it was like watching a conductor with an orchestra.  Well done Susan!

There’s so many sports and student activities going on right now that it’s impossible to single out folks- so, thank to all the sponsors and coaches for spending the time and effort with all the students in the various team and clubs around the school.

FSA and Satisfaction Surveys are now complete.  Information will be coming out in June.  Next week we will be receiving our staffing entitlements, so we anticipate having more information to share at that time.

2021  VSB2021

Thank you to the parents who took the time to complete the survey and sample district visioning guidebook.  Thanks also to the folks who met with Mr. Evans this morning at the brief information meeting (Friday, April 29 in the library) As part II of the Strategic Plan Process, this guidebook information is important for the VSB to have.

Very Important Information for parents of Grade 4, 5, 6 students
Read This

Dear Parents,

The Sr. Management Team of the VSB has asked all schools to survey their parent communities to determine if there is a willingness to engage in a user-pay system of band/strings at schools.  Board would like staff to report back on the feasibility of a user pay band and strings program across the district.  To that end, attached is a survey that we need to have distributed to families of students currently in Grade 4, 5 and 6.   A couple of things for you to keep in mind:

  • It’s open to parents of students in grade 4, 5, and 6.
  • Parents should complete one survey per child.
  • Deadline = Wednesday, May 4.

Details:  The VSB is exploring the possibility of offering a district-wide User-Pay Elementary Band or Strings Program beginning in September 2016.  This program would be for interested students in the upper intermediate grades (Strings: Grades 5-7, Band: Grades 6-7) whose families are willing to pay for this complementary experience.

The intent would be to provide these programs in schools where we have a minimum number of students (20) who have indicated an interest in participating.  If the minimum cannot be achieved at a particular site, then unfortunately, the program cannot be offered at that school.  The fee to participate in the program for next year will likely be between $400 and $500 per year per student.  The exact amount will be determined once we know how many students would be likely to participate and therefore how much teacher staffing would be required.  This fee covers band or strings instruction equivalent to two periods a week either during or adjacent to the regular school day.  It would be understood that students who participated in this program would be responsible for the other subject work that they may miss during class time.  The purchase or rental of the musical instrument (approximately $100) would also be the responsibility of the student.  If the program were to go ahead in your school, payment for next year’s program would have to be made in full before the end of this school year.

At this point, we are in the initial stages of gathering information and we will report back to the Board of Trustees regarding community interest and program feasibility in mid-May.  We will let parents know about the final decision in as timely a manner as possible.

Please complete the survey before Wednesday, May 4, 2016  at either the following link:

Spring Fair!

ATTENTION ALL MAPLE GROVE FAMILIES!

We are blessed to have some amazing parents in our school community.  You are all so talented.  Every time I get to chat with one or two of you I’m always amazed how shy you are- your skill set is so profound we’d love to have you share it with us.  Come volunteer in the school.  Right now we’re in the process of putting on the annual Maple Grove Spring Fair.  This is a favourite event at Maple Grove.  Spring Fair is scheduled this year for Friday, May 27th.

We need you.  If you can help us, please contact Karrie Bogart at ckbogart@shaw.ca
She is awesome to work with and really fun.  This is a great way to get to know more parents and friends in the school community.  Also, our amazing fair organizer, Mr. Tim Luu, is a great mentor and wonderful person to work with.  Tim has selflessly and sometimes single handedly put on this event for many years!
