April 14

principals-message-1Principal’s Message

Dear Parents,
What an interesting way to wrap up the week.  A 4-day week!  Today staff were in the building working on redesigning curriculum as per the Ministry of Education’s direction to move towards personalizing learning.  Today was the second Curriculum Implementation day (March 4 and April 15) mandated by the province to give teachers a chance to get more acquainted with the curriculum before it’s mandated next year.  Staff have been peeling back the layers of what’s new?  What’s expected?  How this works with what I presently do?  How does this work for primary vs intermediate?  Where does Montessori fit into this?  And what will assessment and reporting look like with the new initiative.

Monday is a Professional Development day in which staff are continuing their investigation into Social Emotional Learning, part of differentiated instruction, and how to engage learners with their learning.  Trevor Smitna, Behavioural Consultant for the VSB will be working with the staff along with two of his intensive behavioural support workers on programming and strategies for dealing with enabling students to engage, de-escalate, and attend to their learning.   This is part 3 of a series that the staff have committed in order to improve student engagement and learning.

There are are a number of initiatives that are in various stages of completion. First and foremost is the VSB Budget Process.  There have been a number of amendments to several earlier proposals- please go to the VSB website for appropriate links (www.vsb.bc.ca)

Parents of grades 4 and 7 students should have received their FSA testing results back this week.  The booklet and student marks sheet are the snapshot of each students results.  Mr. Evans will be reporting out on Term 2 report card achievement at the next PAC meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 20th at 7:00 pm.  Students in grade 4 and 7 are busy completing their Satisfaction Surveys for the Ministry of Education.  We anticipate that these will be completed this week.  District and provincial reports for both these surveys/assessments will be available online later in the spring.

Enjoy your weekend,
Mr. Evans

VSB2021

Mr. Evans will be hosting a brief information gathering session on Friday, April 29 in the library at 9:00 am.  All administrators have been asked to gather information as part II of the Strategic Plan Process.  Please refer to the pdf link.  This is a booklet that can be printed and completed by each parent interested in providing feedback on the strategic planning process.

The Document is long (20 pages) but it really gives you, as a parent, an opportunity to express your interests in the direction and focus of Vancouver schools.
