October 9th Update

Thanksgiving

Principal’s Remarks

Today marks the beginning of the Thanksgiving long weekend. Please note that there is no school on Monday, October 12th.  Your child’s first day back at school will be Tuesday, October 13th.  Thanksgiving is traditionally a time to spend with families and friends.  I wish all of you a relaxing and enjoyable time with loved ones.  I truly feel blessed and lucky to be working at Maple Grove.  The students, staff and parents are so supportive and fantastic!  This holiday season, I am grateful for my health and spending time with my family. Namaste

Global Citizenship Club

See poster below from Free the Children.  Maple Grove Citizenship Club is holding a food drive for the Vancouver Food Bank during the week of October 26th to October 30th.  You can drop off your non perishable food items outside the office, or to your child’s classroom teacher.

Global Citizenship Club’s Acts of Kindness

GCC Get Well Cards

The Global Citizenship Club has started our year off by reaching out to people in our community. In partnership with Vancouver General Hospital, the students have been making “get well” cards for patients who could use a little cheering up. Many patients do not have family or friends who are able to visit them and their days can be long without any visitors.  The club members each made a card and wrote heartfelt messages of hope and cheer. We hope that our little bit of kindness helps those in the hospital to have a better day.

Kindergarten Registration Time is Coming Soon

What is new and what do parents need to know?

For kindergarten entry in 2016, registration will begin on November 2, 2015.

  • ALL children will register for kindergarten at their English catchment school – even if you do not intend to attend there.  This includes students who want to go to French Immersion, Montessori or other Choice Programs – even siblings of children already in the program.  If your child was born outside of Canada, then you need to go to the VSB District Reception and Placement Centre (DRPC) and complete the initial Kindergarten registration there.
  • You are encouraged to register between November 2 and January 31.  If your English catchment school does not have space for all the children in the catchment, there will be a lottery in February.
  • Application for all programs of choice – including French Immersion, Montessori, Mandarin Bilingual, Aboriginal Focus School, and Fine Arts – will begin online in early January, 2016.  You will need a Personal Education Number (PEN) to apply and this will only be sent to you if you register at your English catchment school.
