October 3 Update

walk to school

International Walk to School Week is Coming to Maple Grove!

Sponsored by the Global Citizenship Club

For the week of October 6th to 10th we are encouraging all Maple Grove families to walk, roll, cycle or take the bus to school. Students traveling to and from school on transit can take the bus for free! Talk to your friends and plan a walking school bus or ask an adult to walk with you to school. If the Walk to School Ambassadors spot you, you could win a prize!

BOOK FAIR

Thank you very much to all those who supported the book fair. Thank you to the volunteers. Mrs. Tornroos was so pleased with how many people came to help. Thank you also for purchasing. With our reduced library budget it becomes more important for us to raise money to keep our wonderful library vibrant and current.

volunteers needed

Call for Volunteers for Safe Arrival Program

Safe Arrival is a parent-run service that helps makes sure that all our kids get to school safely each day.  After teachers take attendance, Safe Arrival parents follow up on any unexplained absences (absences the teachers do not know about). Parent volunteers help out two days each month, and work out of the main office from 9:00 – 9:45 on the days they are scheduled.

The Safe Arrival program needs several more volunteers to ensure the smooth running of this service. Please consider putting your name forward. Training will be provided. Please contact Emily Lo (emilyklo@shaw.ca) or Andrea Galbraith (galbraith_andrea@yahoo.ca) if you are able to help out, or if you would like more information about the volunteer role.

PAC

PAC MEETING

We had an excellent PAC meeting led by our PAC Chair, Colleen Seager, who has done a wonderful job for two years taking on this leadership role. A very big THANK YOU to Colleen for all she has done and continues to do for the school. Thank you too to all those people who attend PAC meeting and contribute their ideas and help.

Our next PAC meeting on Tuesday, October 28th at 7:00 pm will be the Annual General Meeting. At this meeting you will elect a new executive. Please consider stepping forward to take on one of the positions. This is a fun thing to do and truly contributes to the school. Our PAC does more than just fund raise. For example they organize parent education evenings and through the School Planning Council can have input into the school’s goals.

You can check out this page on our Blog and scroll down to see job descriptions.

If you choose to volunteer for one of the positions you would receive lots of help and support.

GOAL SETTING CONFERENCES

October 8th and 9th

This is an important time when you can meet with your child’s teacher and share with them what you know about your child and what you think might be some good goals for him/her. Some teachers may already have started their meetings. I will also be available on Wednesday evening. Dismissal time on those days is at 2:00 pm.

 thankfulness

THANKFULNESS

This month’s virtue is thankfulness. It is a very good practice for everyone to think of what they are thankful for. Many families do this at Thanksgiving dinner. I find that we usually talk about the same things: family, friends, good health etc. I always find it challenging because I want to say that the most valuable things in my life are the people I am sitting with. I think that for one month if all the family can say one thing that they are thankful for, and come up with something new for every day of the month, then dinnertime together will be interesting and  positive. You will also learn a lot about each other.

Upcoming Dates:

October 8th and 9th – Goal Setting conferences – Early dismissal at 2:00 pm

October 13 – Thanksgiving Day holiday

October 24 – Province wide Professional Development Day – No school for students

October 27 – DEAR   Drop everything and read

October 28- PAC AGM 7:00 pm

Montessori PAC 5:30 pmphotographer

October 28 – Individual Photo Day
