YOUR VOICE IN PUBLIC EDUCATION
Express your opinion about calendar changes, (do you want year-round schooling or do you like the long summer holiday), the expansion of programs such as Montessori, Mandarin, French Immersion, and the use of school property, which is presently underutilized. There is a survey at this link. http://www.vsb.bc.ca/voice.aspx Scroll down to the button on the lower half of the screen on the right. If you need some help, I am happy to help you access this on the library computer.
Very soon we will be publishing the school calendar for 2012-2013. It will be the same throughout the district except for the dates for parent-teacher conferences. In the coming year. instead of ten District Closure Days, there will be five. This was decided in part at the request of the District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC). It is important to realise that parents’ views are valued at the school board as well as at the school. If you have opinions that relate to District policy, for example with respect to the calendar, school closures, special programs etc. the Vancouver School Board is interested in your opinion. Take the survey above, or you can send an email to one of the trustees or the superintendent.

School Growth Plan
This year, as you know, has been unusual in some ways, although at Maple Grove we have continued to provide students with as rich an educational program as we can. Work has continued throughout the year on our school goal of improving oral language. There has been much work done in the classroom on developing our students’ ability to be articulate. Because throughout the district we have not been meeting to talk about goals for next year, nor have we been collecting data on the attainment of goals, every school in Vancouver will be adopting the same goals for the coming year as we had for this year. This means that we will continue with our school goal of improving oral language for 2012-2013.

JUSTICE AND LOYALTY
This month our virtues are justice and loyalty. Please help us by talking to your children about them.
Justice: Practicing justice is being fair in everything you do. It is seeing with your own eyes and not judging something or someone by what other people tell you. Being just is standing up for your rights and the rights of other people. It is taking responsibility if you make a mistake, and making amends. Justice means that every person’s rights are protected.
Loyalty: Loyalty is staying true to someone. It is standing up for something you believe in without wavering. It is being faithful to your family, country, school, friends or ideals – when the going gets tough. as well as when things are good. When you are a loyal friend, even if someone disappoints you, you still stay true to them. Loyalty is staying committed.
