EARTH DAY IS APRIL 22ND

At school we are celebrating Earth Day today by turning off lights, having our Earth Day Assembly to emphasise what we can do to help our planet.  Many classes will be doing neighbourhood cleanup today as well. This is a good time to talk with your children about the responsible use of the resources on our planet. It is a good time to ask ourselves the question about what more we could be doing. So many of our decisions in life require us to balance questions of ethics, conservation, responsibility and so on. While these are very complex questions to consider, and we each will make our own priorities, talking to children about how to make decisions about how they live their lives gives them important values and skills for the future. Even a small question like should I have ten more minutes snooze time or should I make sure I have time to walk to school? – should I drop this candy wrapper on the ground, or walk over to the garbage bin? – should I even eat the candy knowing it provides no nutrition? – should I eat locally grown potatoes or imported rice? There are so many questions to ask our children. I think we might be surprised at some of the answers they give us.

Here is Thea Mclaren’s presentation to the assembly for Earth Day today.

Global warming is caused by carbon dioxide. It is affecting the polar bears. They live on sea ice floes. The one food they depend on, seals, also lives on sea ice floes. But since global warming has come about the ice floes are melting and the polar bears are losing their homes. If the female polar bear does not get enough food she will not have babies and if she doesn’t have babies the polar bears will start to become extinct. But if we can slow it down or even stop it, the level of carbon dioxide will stay down, and the temperatures in the Arctic will stay down and that will improve conditions for the polar bears.

So here are the ways you can help:

  • Turn off lights when you leave the room
  • ride your bike or walk instead of going by car
  • recycle
  • plant a tree
  • Thank you for helping the world

 Here is my poem

Who can do something? You can.
To stop global warming. You can.
What’s the best way to help – Stop the ice from its melt?
So say “I will” and raise you hand And save the polar bears melting land.

It was very pleasing to see the whole school raise their hands for Thea. Thank you, Thea, for showing leadership and commitment.

Global Citizenship Club

Our school raised $681.15 through the sales of the Variety Club Star Wars pins.
As active fund raisers, Maple Grove was put into a draw and won $500 which was donated by Buy-Low Foods.  Global Citizenship Club has decided that they will spend this money on something to benefit the whole school, as well as giving back some of it to the Variety Club. Well done global citizens!   This is an example of the   true Maple Grove generosity of spirit,  and care for the community.
Thank you to Ms Lam and Ms Adams for continuing their excellent work with the Global Citizenship Club.

Mabel’s Labels

Ever wonder where your child’s things get to? We’ve noticed a growing pile of things in the school lost and found, most of which are not labeled. And what about when your child leaves something at a friend’s house? As a parent it is so frustrating to have a child’s things go missing. Solution: Order Mabel’s Labels!  Not only can your children’s things be found but you are also supporting  Maple Grove’s fundraising! Buying the labels in not only simple but lots of fun as there are fabulous graphics and colours to suit all styles.  Simply use this link to the site to purchase your labels. www.maplegrove.mabel.ca
